NASA, STEM and PBL

How do NASA, STEM, and PBL meet the needs of 21st century education?

NASA
As stated in the "Memorandum of Understanding", NASA and the NSF (National Science Foundation) agree to work together in expanding opportunities for promoting STEM education and to increase participation in those areas by minorities.  They will accomplish this by renewing the interest of students and the general public in science and technology through the development and funding of innovative, hands-on, learning activities for use in in STEM education programs.

NASA has been an major innovator in science and engineering since it's creation and therefore has a vested interest in creating scientifically literate workforce.

STEM and PBL
To me STEM and PBL seem to be one in the same.  Each promotes an interdisciplinary curriculum that encourages critical thinking and innovation by solving real-world problems.  A tall order to say the least.  I use inquiry in my class all the time and that blends science, mathematics, and technology.  But I know little to nothing about the engineering design process.
